Preferred Wording for Bid Specification

Close-up of copper wires and copper plates.

Construction Spec

Thin flat composite ground grid conductor that has a thickness between 0.050 inches and 0.100 inches, including a core made of a corrosion-resistant alloy and a copper sheath between 0.015 inches and 0.030 inches thick, the ratio of width to thickness being at least 11:1 .

Resistance Spec

Sufficient contact surface area to lower measured ohms in the field and/or to replace vertical electrodes (ground rods) in rocky soils or areas of shallow bedrock and/or to replace round cross-sectional cables in high resistivity soils.

Fusing Spec

Current carrying capacity (electro-thermal "fusing") like 500 kcmil of between 5040 and 6161 I^2t.

Or, current carrying capacity (electro-thermal "fusing") like 350 kcmil of between 2470 and 3018 I^2t.

Or, current carrying capacity (electro-thermal "fusing") like 4/0 AWG of between 955 and 1167 I^2t.

Or, current carrying capacity (electro-thermal "fusing") like 2/0 AWG of between 357 and 436 I^2t.

Installed Service Spec

Service life per National Bureau of Standards circ. 450, or evidence to support performance for 100 years.

Quality Control Spec

ASTM construction for thin flat 70% IACS copper clad steel per B432 and B910, including a diffusion bond layer between the copper and the alloy steel layers of between 150 and 250 nanometers thick, as demonstrated by a scanning transmission electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy.
